December 10 - 16, 2017
The weather this year is very cool in the evenings, it has been as low at 14 degrees Celsius but warms up into the high 20's and low 30's during the day.
Allan had more work done on the tooth he had the root channel on last year, this was putting on a permanent crown
We stopped at a little restaurant on the Port side named Tuch Tlan across from the Mayan Artisan Market on Av Javier Rojo Gomez. While I was in the bathroom this family cat came and took my chair.
He has such an innocent look how could I ask him to move? So I pulled up another chair and sat beside him at our table while he slept. I later heard he was a rescue from Cause4Paws here in Puerto Morelos.
This week they are continuing the installation of their Christmas decorations. It will be beautiful in the evening when the lights are lit.
This is a view of the ocean from the town park, it was just beautiful and so quiet and peaceful. One of those days with no waves on the reef.
On our way back into the Colonia we noticed they are doing an addition to the Municipal Medical Centre.
Our favourite fish restaurant and fresh fish outlet now has a name "Cabrillas"
Another of the many restaurants here in the Colonia is "Las Koras"
Along the road as we were walking we came upon someone's lost slipper. Just a piece of floor carpet cut, folded over and tied with a piece of plastic cord. Some child has a very inventive parent.
One evening we met with these two lovely ladies for dinner at Chilpayas. We had a great meal and a lovely visit with them. Diane on the left was very instrumental in organizing the Cause 4 Paws here in Puerto Morelos and continues to be its driving force. Diane's dedication has certainly made an amazing change to the lives of the unwanted pets. She has also set up a clinic for neutering and spaying of family pets which has helped tremendously in controlling the population of these animals. Next to Diane is Sandra, Sandra fell in love with Puerto Morelos as we all have and decided she would like to do something for the community and its people. Sandra took it upon herself to work with the women of the community - she taught them how to use a sewing machine and worked with them to bring back their custom dances and dress. The ladies work with her now at the Jungle Market where they have set up a spa which caters to a large clientele from the all inclusive resorts and many from Puerto Morelos and its surrounding communities as well. The women sell their handmade crafts at the Jungle Market on weekends while they hold the traditional dances and the sale of local foods. Sandra also tells us that many have their wares for sale at the Mayan Artisan Market in the Port as well. With Sandra's guidance and help many of these women are the sole income earners in their family. These women are now more independent and take pride in their work.
The water truck stops by on a regular basis to deliver our drinking water.
We put up our Christmas Lights
They look so pretty at night, both inside
and out.
We went for a walk in the park one evening here in the Colonia. Children were playing soccer
and just hanging out.
The park was beautifully lit this year.
It was a cool evening for the locals, you notice the long jeans and the dog has a jacket.
December 17 to 23
Just happened to walk past a butcher shop, could not resist a photo of the pig's head. I can taste my Grandma Wright's head cheese - fond memories.
We had brunch at "el mangar"
and it was as good as it looks.
While sitting at el manglar we did some people watching - this family above had their bike packed with 3 people (the child in the middle) and lots of groceries. A Sunday family outing.
One evening we ate dinner of shrimps at Las Koras - it was very good too.
Their beer is good and cold also!
I went back into the restaurant as we had been sitting out by the street and to my surprise I found the chef preparing a gigantic fish for someone's meal.
He de-boned it,covered it with spices and possibly garlic
then placed it on a grilling toaster like cooking ware
and placed it on the fire to cook! The aroma was just mouth watering.
I think these were the people waiting for the cooked fish - they certainly were a happy bunch.
December 17 to 23, 2017
This was a bad week for me, I had another bout of the amoebas. Last year's episode which I though was terrible was very mild compared to what I had this year. I had severe upper and lower abdominal cramps, headache and extreme diarrhea which contained signs of blood. My tongue was snow white, covered totally and my leg and arm muscles were contracting like you see in a poltergeist movie. I could not get out of bed or stand without help, it was extremely painful. A local doctor "Dr. Victor" came to the house 5 times to see and treat me with intravenous and medications. I was so dehydrated I lost 7 pounds in 4 days. The amoebas caused a bacteria which gave me an infection also. I had very little strength, I don't know what I would have done without Allan - he tended to me every minute of every day that week, from helping me get to and from the bathroom, drying me off and dressing me after a shower. I had no appetite for food or water so he made a game of every hour on the hour he would come in with electrolytes and bananas - both of these are so gross on a good day but I had to have at least one bite of the banana to increase my potassium and two sips of the electrolytes. Before the end of the first day of his game, I was starting to feel better with each bite and sip.
He went out shopping one day and came back with the flower arrangement in the above photo. He's a keeper. Oh, and he even bought me bluetooth speakers for my lap top for Christmas!
Our flight back home was originally scheduled for December 21st, I was so weak that I could never have made the trip so we postponed our flight until December 28th, a week later. That meant we missed Christmas with the kids but we did have the family together on December 30th which was nice. We love having family for a good home cooked meal. Everyone chipped in to help prepare the dinner and serve it - that was a nice touch, family happily working together.
December 24 to 30, 2017
We had a very quiet Christmas here in Puerto Morelos this year. Our original plan was to be home for Christmas and have a dinner with Dwayne, Nancy and their family - their plan was to have everyone ware a crazy Christmas T shirt or sweater. Well you can not easily find those here in Puerto Morelos so Allan and I bought marajuana T shirts and added wording in glitter glue. Some of which were - Mari Juana, Happy Holiblaze, High Ho, High Ho, Mary and Bright, Come Fly High With Me and Come Look'in For A Joint With Me. Our hats had Merry Cannabis and Mistlestoned.
s
We put them on for photos on Christmas day and while at home we wore them for the December 30th dinner. The kids thought they were funny. - Mission accomplished!!
December 31, 2017 to January 6 2018
We returned to Canada on December 28th and had flights booked for January 3rd to return to Puerto Morelos. .It was a beautiful morning in Sudbury at 4:30 am and we were anxious to get on our way.
Flights were booked with WestJet and all looked well, until we arrived at check in. The attendant said " did you not get an e-mail stating this flight was cancelled?" My immediate response was "No I didn't - we didn't have time from when we woke up until we were in our vehicle heading to the airport." Apparently the weather was too bad the night before for the last flight from Toronto to Sudbury so even though the weather was good now in Sudbury there was no plane to get us to Toronto. Taking another air service would not work because there were only 2 Westjet flights going to Cancun and they left before 10 am in the morning.
They gave us a hotel voucher for the Radisson in downtown Sudbury, no one is going to complain about that!!
Nice bathroom with neatly folded towels.
Great view of the falling snow that day
Comfy beds and high speed internet - hey this was great!!
We had a delicious lunch in the Pesto's Italian Eatery then went to the Lounge Theatre for a movie in the afternoon, did some shopping in the downtown mall then went for dinner.
The snow had continued to fall throughout the day making the road slushy but not impossible for travel.
We went to Wacky Wings for a dinner of Wings of course.
While there we looked around at the road signs and saw this, Cancun 2,860 kms. A long trip ahead of us for sure.
The next day, January 4th we left Sudbury the weather was -23 that morning and we arrived in Cancun on time at a temperature of +30. No bad weather or major flight delays.
The clouds look so soft from above them.
We had to wait a bit before we could land so had a great view of things below us which we don't normally get to see. This a view of the airport.
The Hotel Zone of Cancun
A water park
A mangrove
We weren't in our casa's back patio until we saw this beautiful oriel - they are different from ours back in Canada.
Allan was anxious to unpack and set up his
stainless steel BBQ Covers.
What a difference in cooking time for our BBQ now, they keep the heat in and food is done in no time..
Lots of bird poop on our back patio walls when we returned and these Morning Doves are a big part of the problem. We have to keep a bottle of cleaner handy for clean ups.
When we are in the Port at lunch time we like to stop at Caribelos for lunch - they have the best shrimp tacos! The price is right too at 25 pesos each and a hamburger with frys is 50 pesos = lunch cost us 100. pesos for 2 tacos and a burger
(equivalent to approximately $6.50 Cn).
The town is preparing for the celebration of the anniversary of Puerto Morelos becoming a municipality. We had good intentions of being at this year's celebration but something came up so we did not attend.
Some days are nicer on the beach than others - this was one of those days that was not so nice.
This brings us to a close our our weeks from December 10th 2017 to January 6th 2018 how time flies!
An update on my amoebas - Dr. Victor has me on a holistic medication made from leaves of trees in the jungle. I take drops in water three times a day for 30 days - this will give me immunity to the amoebas for 6 months. I so hope it works, if not we may have to stop coming to Mexico. These amoebas are quite common among the locals in their summer months, so this time of year is rare - he said out of 100 people only 20 will have signs and symptoms, out of that 20 only one person will have severe signs and symptoms such as I have. I am in that lucky 1%. These amoebas live only in the tropics and live in the soil, dust and water. They are transmitted though improper hand washing, improper food preparation, person to person through a hug, kiss, sneeze, cough, or hand to hand and from animals to humans.
Hosta Luego mis amegos y mis amegas.
Stay safe, warm and healthy.
