October 27 to November 2, 2019

Another week gone - hard to believe we have been here 5 weeks already. Still no luggage.

Sunday we returned to the market for more good finds. I bought 2 more dresses - they are so much cooler that the heavy shorts I have. There was nothing for Allan in the line of clothing so we went to other shops throughout the community where we found him another pair of shorts and me a pair of shoes to match one of the dresses I bought- yippee!

At every Sunday market this lady has her street side roasted
corn for sale.

After the market we took a walk about town and the rain started. Everyone was running for shelter. It had rained earlier in the day so when we left on our shopping tour we took along our umbrellas. Wise move.

We ducked into El Picudito's for lunch.

Across the street from El Picudito there is a taco stand which is always crowded with customers. The rain closed the stand and this man decided to take a rest. The rain here is so warm and when it is past the air is very humid, certainly different from home.

Two restaurants close to Chedraui - this one is in a new location, it was down the street further, across from the public library and the one below is across the street corner from this one.

It is to be open next week - lots of
Mexican food to choose from.

The water from today's cloud bursts lays in the low areas of the streets. Drains are not properly located for water removal.

Monday was a trip to Cancun to sight see and do a bit of shopping. Claudia came with us again as our tour guide.
We went to a fabric/decor shop - These Christmas trees are a beautiful site, a little early but still beautiful just the same.

These floor stand lamps were cute too but very expensive.

Home Depot has Poinsettias out already.

We had lunch at Las de Guanatos Restaurant - it is on the edge of the Hotel Zone and behind Plaza Las Americas.

Allan and I chose to have "Torta Ahogada" from Guadalajara, mine was with shrimp of course and Allan's was with pork. It is a hard crusted roll, you spoon the sauce over it to soften it making it easier to eat. Messy but delicious. The advantages of travelling with someone who knows the area and customs.

Claudia chose to have "Taco de papa Ahogado" with shrimp and lots of hot spice sauce - which she loves.

This is the result of the hot sauce - it looks very
agonizing to me. lol

.......as she wipes the tears from her eyes and the
sweat from her brow. Satisfied!

Love the toilet signs.

This week was the celebration of Day of the Dead
Information of the celebration can be found here at:

We went to Plaza 23 in Cancun which is a group of vendors selling everything from candy to light covers.

Lots of candy and sugar skulls in various sizes.

Marigolds play an important part in the
celebration. More on that here:

All of these items play a very important part in the
celebration of Day of the Dead.

This is a bar we passed by on our way back to the ADO bus station - it sounded like it would be a lot of fun, the music was playing and people sounded like they were having a good time.

The Day of the Dead display at the ADO bus station.

On our shopping trip to Cancun, Allan purchased an outdoor light for our entrance way. The one that was there had a weird bulb which he could not find a replacement for so he bought a new fixture that takes a common bulb.

Another outing in our village - this time we were shopping for items to add to our alter for Day of the Dead and stopped at one of our favourite places to eat on Calle Chaca - can't think of its name right now but we certainly know where it is.

Another heavy rain passed while we were there causing us to stay a bit longer - The sound of the rain pounding on the steel roof was awesome.

We have been having an infestation of  little red and black bugs which resemble the Box Elder Bug. I thought I would get advise from one of the local facebook groups on an exterminator t call but all I received was negative feedback - about me not the bugs. Oh well, shit happens and  this was one of those times to just walk away.

We hired the services of a local plant/tree nursery manager "Chucho" who has taken great care of us and our bug infestation. First we had to clean up any area with dead leaves and other debris on our neigbour's roofs which we did as best we could.  This steel roof is on our neighbours back building and these  long plastic pipes where laying on it. We had permission from the neighbour  to get rid of the leaves and the bugs.

These pipes had many leaves packed inside, when we stood the pipes up on end and tapped them on the cement dried leaves and hundreds of those little red and black bugs came out!

Chucho stayed hard at work planting our new plants on the roof and some for the front and back yards. I am so happy to get these planted. When he was finished he further cleaned the steel roof and then went to the neighbour's back yard and cleaned up 6 large garbage bags of leaves which had been pushed off the steel roof. He then sprayed their yard and ours with an insecticide to kill the bugs. So far so good, only the odd bug has been seen since the spraying.

Chucho says our ecosystem is broken - there are so many cats in the neighbourhood and they eat all the frogs, newts and other critters that eat the insects. This sounds like a loosing battle for us.

This is a drone photo of the artwork in the square at the port during this past week. Many artists and children volunteered their time to make this beautiful display in celebration of the Day of the Dead. The materials used were painted, dyed wood shavings. Amazing.

The local fish street vendor was by but did not have any fillets, only whole fish which had to be scaled or filleted by yourself so we passed, maybe next time.

The celebration for Day of the Dead starts
October 31 and runs to November 2nd which
is the biggest day for celebrations.  Many workers
in stores and restaurants were dressed for the occasion.

El Sazon Mexicano opened it doors late this week and they have their breakfast menu on display. They are open all day so there are  many other items to choose from.

Saturday we joined others in the community and prepared a Day of the Dead alter at our casa. There was a walk about town held and many people took the walk to view the works of the alter creators. We were one of 23 alters in both the Colonia and on the Port side.

Many people (about 40) came by to view our alter and we handed out candy to the children.

We really enjoyed participating and speaking with everyone who came by. This was the first year for the event here in Puerto Morelos so we are looking forward to doing it again next year.

That ends another week, so until next time stay safe, keep smiling and keep warm! I wonder how many new babies with be born in the late spring - early summer ???
